This Little Rebellion Brings Comfort To The Suffering And Money To Charities

When Jake Teitelbaum was fighting cancer, he hated wearing the hospital-issued socks and instead brought bright socks from home. It gave him a way to manifest his fighting spirit.

Having recovered, he’s launched a social enterprise called Resilience Gives, which helps people like Jake himself to design a flashy pair of socks and then sell them to their friends to raise money for a charity of their choice.

So far, he reports raising $117,000 from the sale of more than 14,000 pairs of socks in 72 different designs, each one for a charity.

Interview with Jake Teitelbaum, the Founder & CEO of Resilience Gives.

The following is the pre-interview with Jake Teitelbaum. Be sure to watch the recorded interview above.

For-profit/Nonprofit: For-profit

Revenue model: For every pair of socks sold, Resilience Gives receives 50% of proceeds. The other 50% is donated to the charity of choice of whoever designed those socks.

What is the problem you solve and how do you solve it?

Beyond providing a more meaningful and personally relevant fundraising tool for patient communities, Resilience Gives is a lifestyle brand centered around patient empowerment.

In modern society, we have a narrative that patients are meant to be pitied and then fixed before they are to return to normal society. However, research continues to show that by confronting acute health problems, individuals also have the potential to develop incredible amounts of resiliency. In other words, we’ve thought about the patient-experience as inherently weakening, but the reality is that these experiences can mold us to be stronger and more empathetic humans. This movement is about empowering patients and their communities to tap into this potential to become their best selves.
